The Nature of Heuristics II : Background and Examples

چکیده
Machine learning can be categorized along many dimensions, an important one of which is `degree o f human guidance or forethought' . This continuum stretches from rote learning, through carefully guided concept-formation by observation, out toward independent theory formation . Six years ago, the AM program was constructed as an experiment in this latter kind of learning by discovery . Its source of power was a large body of heuristics, rules which guided it toward fruitful topics of investigation , toward profitable experiments to perform, toward plausible hypotheses and definitions . Since that time, we have gained a deeper insight into the nature of heuristics and the nature of the process of formin g and extending theories empirically . `The Nature of Heuristics I' paper presented the theoretical basi s for this work, with an emphasis on how heuristics relate to each other . This paper presents ou r accretion model of theory formation, and gives many examples of its use in producing new discoverie s in various fields. These examples are drawn from runs of a program called EURISKO, the successor to AM, that embodies the accretion model and uses a corpus of heuristics to guide its behavior . Since our model demands the ability to discover new heuristics periodically, as well as new domain objects an d operators, some of our examples illustrate that process as well . `The Nature of Heuristics III' pape r describes the architecture of the EURISKO program, and conclusions we have made from its behavior . 1 . The Learning Spectru m This paper deals with learning, by which we intend to include all processe s which result in accretion of knowledge. Section 1 surveys the spectrum of learning, from rote memorization to more complex activities . Section 2 focuse s on the far end of the learning spectrum, inductive inference . Section 3 proposes a model for the far end of that activity, empirical theory formation . That mode l accounts for the discovery of new heuristics as well as new task-specific object s and operations . Finally, Section 4 presents dozens of examples of the model i n action, producing discoveries in many different fields . A discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm with local search for a production-based two-echelon single-vendor multiple-buyer supply chain
This paper formulates a two-echelon single-producer multi-buyer supply chain model, while a single product is produced and transported to the buyers by the producer. The producer and the buyers apply vendor-managed inventory mode of operation. It is assumed that the producer applies economic production quantity policy, which implies a constant production rate at the producer. The operational pa...
متن کاملDoctor in circulation; A study on the historical background of the establishment and expansion of the Health Corps in Iran
After September 1931 and the end of World War II, the Pahlavi government turned its attention to the villages and the implementation of the second development plan, followed by rural health programs. With the formation of the Health Corps in 1954, as the seventh principle of the Shah and the Nation Revolution, all physicians and pharmacists in the service of the conscription system were asked t...
متن کاملMOUTH BROODING FISH ALGORITHM FOR COST OPTIMIZATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE ONE-WAY RIBBED SLABS
In this paper, the optimum design of a reinforced concrete one-way ribbed slab, is presented via recently developed metaheuristic algorithm, namely, the Mouth Brooding Fish (MBF). Meta-heuristics based on evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence are outstanding examples of nature-inspired solution techniques. The MBF algorithm simulates the symbiotic interaction strategies adopted by org...
متن کاملEPQ model with depreciation cost and process quality cost as continuous functions of time
Extensive research has been devoted to economic production quantity (EPQ) problem. However, little atten-tion has been paid to problems where depreciation cost and process quality cost must be considered, simulta-neously. In this paper, we consider the economic production quantity model of minimizing the annual total cost subject to depreciation cost and process quality cost, where depreciation...
متن کاملA bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines with fuzzy parameters by two fuzzy multi-objective meta-heuristics
This paper considers a bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines to minimize the makespan and maximum tardiness, simultaneously. Each job has a specific size and the data corresponding to its ready time, due date and processing time-dependent machine are uncertain and determined by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Each machine has a specific capacity,...
